Imphal: Security forces and Manipur Police hauled six people into custody during a string of operations across Imphal East and Ukhrul districts. They seized firearms, ammunition, and wireless gear. The raids targeted illegal weapon stockpiles and militant activity.
On July 15, police grabbed two residents in Imphal East: Sanjrambam Khunjaoba Meitei, 54, and Laishram Sonamani Meitei, 53. A search of Sonamani Meitei’s home turned up a .38 calibre pistol, two magazines, and 11 rounds of mixed ammunition. Later that day, joint teams including CoBRA commandos hit Nongshum and Uyumpok. They arrested 44-year-old Sanasam Ibocha, also known as Abocha Singh. Police found an AK-56 rifle, a .32 calibre pistol, a magazine, and 27 rounds of AK-56 ammunition in his possession.
In a separate strike on July 15, forces apprehended Ngathem Bhimojit Singh, 38, alias Bhimo. He is an active cadre of the KCP-MC Progressive. Officers picked him up in Khurai Ahongei Thangjam Leikai near the Porompat Police Station. The day prior, on July 14, troops moved into Ukhrul district. They combed TM Kasom and Sikibung villages. Four locals faced arrest: Wungphayo Kasar, 24, Ninglum Awungshi, 26, Lunglen Yaoreingam, 21, and Vareiyo Lunglen, 57. The team confiscated two single-barrel breech-loading guns, cartridges, and a wireless radio.
The arrests triggered immediate backlash. Meira Paibis groups blocked roads in a failed bid to stop the police. The women’s wing of Ereibak Kanba Lup condemned the move. Convenor Heikrujam Malemkhombi Leima stated, "residents of Uyumpok and Nongshum have long remained vulnerable and have frequently been targeted by Kuki militants." Authorities confirmed that investigations into all six cases remain active.
