Imphal: Manipur Police seized 29 firearms and a pile of explosives Sunday during a raid in the Imphal East district. Intelligence reports of armed men in the Wakha Ching area triggered the response. Forces moved in at 6:15 pm.
Dr. S. Ibomcha Singh led the mission. He serves as Commandant of the 6th India Reserve Battalion and oversees the Special Commando Unit. Subedar L. Bibekananda Singh assisted him. The team combed the jungle near the Shelloi Langmai Composite Farm. They found four plastic bags hidden in the dirt.
The haul includes five SLRs, two INSAS rifles with straight butts, two INSAS rifles with folding butts, and two AK Ghatak rifles. The list continues with one INSAS Light Machine Gun, six .303 rifles, three double-barrel breech-loading guns, seven single-barrel breech-loading guns, and one pump-action gun. Several magazines turned up as well.
Security forces also bagged one Lathode bomb and significant ammunition. Recovered items include 530 rounds of .303 live ammo, 64 rounds of 7.62 mm SLR ammo, 19 INSAS live rounds, six 5.56 mm carbine rounds, 40 drill cartridges, and 17 chargers for .303 rifles. Officials moved the cache to a local police station.
No suspects were caught. Police said, "Further search operations in the area are continuing to trace any additional arms, explosives or other incriminating materials." Teams remain in the field to locate those behind the hidden weapons.
