Imphal: Manipur Police and the 6th India Reserve Battalion seized 29 firearms and a large ammunition cache on Sunday. The operation began at 6.15 pm in the Wakha Ching area of Imphal East district. Intelligence reports suggested armed miscreants were moving through the region. Security teams cordoned off the area and searched the forest near Wakha Hill, opposite the Shelloi Langmai Composite Farm.
Dr. S. Ibomcha Singh, Commandant of the 6th IRB, led the sweep alongside Subedar L. Bibekananda Singh. The team discovered four plastic bags hidden in the brush. Inside, they found five Self-Loading Rifles, two AK Ghatak rifles, one INSAS Light Machine Gun, and four INSAS rifles. They also recovered six .303 rifles, three double-barrel breech-loading guns, seven single-barrel breech-loading guns, and one pump-action gun. Several magazines were included in the haul.
The inventory of seized explosives and munitions is extensive. Officers cataloged one Lathode bomb, 530 rounds of .303 ammunition, 64 SLR rounds, 19 INSAS rounds, and six 5.56 mm carbine rounds. They also found 40 drill cartridges and 17 chargers for .303 rifles. No suspects were caught at the site. The Manipur Police stated: "Further search operations in the area are continuing to trace any additional arms, explosives or other incriminating materials."
Operations expanded across the state. On July 26, police arrested 33-year-old Letmintgang Haolai in the Churachandpur district. He was carrying 2.5 kg of suspected brown sugar and a two-wheeler. Additionally, security forces recovered a pompi gun, a 12-bore rifle, nine live rounds, an improvised mortar shell, and an IED during July 25 operations in Ukhrul district villages including Shangkai and Mongkot Chepu.
