Shillong: A critical stretch of the Agia-Medhipara-Phulbari-Tura (AMPT) road has collapsed shortly after a Rs 9 crore repair project, sparking widespread anger among residents in the Garo Hills plains belt. Midas Constructions, a firm based in Guwahati, finished the repairs on the 18-km route between Shyamding and Rajabala in February, yet the infrastructure began failing within two weeks.
The road conditions are currently severe, with massive potholes making travel difficult and time-consuming. While the section from Shyamding to Nayagaon remains partially functional, the road beyond Nayagaon is now in a state of disrepair that mirrors its condition prior to the recent project. Residents rely on this route as a vital link between Assam and Meghalaya.
Local social activist Mostapha Kabir voiced the frustration of the community regarding the waste of public funds. He stated, "The repair was absolutely substandard and wore off even before the rains set in. We were really surprised during the visit and demanded answers from the contractor."
Following pressure from the public, Rajabala MLA Mizanur Rahman Kazi coordinated a joint inspection with the chief engineer and PWD officials. The team confirmed the poor quality of the work and reached an agreement with the contractor to perform repairs again. According to Kazi, the contractor has pledged to begin the remedial work immediately, as local leaders push for accountability regarding the failed project.
