Residents Allege Corruption After New Road Crumbles in North Karimganj

Guwahati: A road construction project in the West Kanishail area of North Karimganj has sparked outrage after the surface began cracking and collapsing only three months after completion. The 500-metre road, which cost 41.30 lakh rupees, was funded by the Chief Minister's road development scheme.

Locals waited years for this paved road, but the project faced significant delays under contractor Abdun Nur. While the work was originally scheduled for 2024, it was not finished until 2026. Shortly after the opening, residents reported that the bitumen layers were peeling away and the edges of the road had started to crumble. Community members blame the damage on inadequate soil filling along the shoulders of the road.

Despite repeated complaints directed at the contractor and the departmental engineer, no repairs have been made. Frustrated by the lack of response, residents have filed a formal memorandum with the District Commissioner. They are now calling on the Chief Minister to intervene, demanding the reconstruction of the road to ensure the area finally has the durable infrastructure it was promised.
