Itanagar: Tai Khamti-Singpho organizations in Namsai are hitting back hard. Representatives from the Tai Khamti Singpho Council, Tai Khamti Development Society, All Tai Khamti Singpho Students Union, and the District Students Union held a press meet on Wednesday. They slammed Arunachal ST Bachao Andolan Committee general secretary Millo Ambo for his recent comments against Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein.
Ambo demanded that Mein step down from his post. He wanted Mein relieved of his duties to clear the path for a probe into the Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe re-verification exercise. Ambo made these claims while serving on the High Power Committee on APST Re-Verification. The tribal groups rejected these allegations outright. They insist Mein is a member of the Tai Khamti tribe and his status is not up for debate.
The groups claim Ambo damaged the reputation of their leader and hurt community sentiments. A community leader stated, "Mein was a leader of the community and that his Scheduled Tribe status was not in question." The coalition gave Ambo a three-day deadline to publicly withdraw his remarks and apologize.
These organizations warned that public statements regarding tribal identity and constitutional safeguards need more care. They urged stakeholders to show restraint and keep such disputes within the proper legal channels.
