Shillong: The Meghalaya State Zoo has announced the birth of a rare stump-tailed macaque, marking the first time the vulnerable species has successfully bred at the facility. Veterinary teams are currently monitoring the newborn to ensure it remains healthy while staying with its mother and the rest of the troop.

The parents of the newborn macaque arrived in Shillong from the Aizawl Zoological Park in Mizoram. Their relocation was part of an animal exchange program designed to maintain healthy captive populations and bolster regional conservation efforts. This success provides a meaningful boost to ex-situ conservation initiatives that focus on protecting threatened species through scientific management.

D. Sathiyan, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden, praised the progress as a major win for the state. He stated, "The successful birth reflects the sustained efforts being made towards wildlife conservation and demonstrates Meghalaya’s commitment to scientific zoo management and the protection of vulnerable species."

Wildlife officials believe this milestone serves to highlight the essential role modern zoological institutions play in preserving biodiversity. The birth is expected to raise public awareness about the survival of threatened species and improve the effectiveness of ongoing wildlife management programs within the state.
