Kohima: A recent poll shows Eastern Nagaland is split on whether the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority will actually work. Uncertainty dominates the local mood. While 19% of respondents feel hopeful, 36% expect the body to fail. The remaining 45% remain non-committal, claiming the success of the project relies entirely on leadership integrity and how officials spend the money.
Critics fear entrenched corruption and elite capture will derail the authority. Skeptics pointed toward existing bodies like the Department of Underdeveloped Areas, or DUDA, as examples of failed infrastructure. One respondent dismissed the plan bluntly: "A big no. This looks more like a trap than a genuine solution." Others worried that the structure will simply lead to the enrichment of a few powerful leaders rather than helping ordinary citizens.
Division remains a major concern for the region. Many fear the project could pit the six districts represented by the Eastern Naga People’s Organisation against one another. Some warned that internal politics will create new conflicts. "Just hope that there is no division among the 6 districts again because of ism," one participant noted.
Optimists hang their hopes on the scale of funding. Central authorities have earmarked 10,000 crore for the six districts. Supporters claim the region’s high education levels and innovation will drive progress. They argue that if leaders remain accountable, the area will finally see real change. Other residents viewed the authority as the result of a long, hard political fight. They urged their fellow citizens to remain patient. For now, the future of the region stays tied to how representatives handle the cash.
