Shillong: Police in Shillong are still awaiting post-mortem results seven days after the bodies of Simanta Hajong, 21, and Pronomy Hajong, 22, were discovered hanging in a shed at Lumsohphoh. The couple, originally from the South West Khasi Hills district, were found on June 14 near their workplace along the Shillong-Jowai Road. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed the delay in receiving forensic documentation on Sunday.
The Ranikor block unit of the National People’s Party has formally urged authorities to establish a Special Investigation Team to ensure a transparent inquiry. Local residents and family members remain skeptical of the initial suicide assessment, pointing to the circumstances of the location and the couple's personal history. Nelbi T. Sangma, president of the unit, stated, “The investigation should remove all doubts and satisfy the family members who are seeking the truth.”
Family members and villagers noted that the pair worked in the area to overcome financial hardship. Concerns have surfaced regarding the conditions of their employment, specifically citing that Pronomy frequently worked past midnight. Local accounts indicate that Simanta would often meet her after shifts to walk her home, as their accommodation was situated a significant distance away. Investigators are now facing mounting pressure to resolve these inconsistencies and address the growing public concern surrounding the tragedy.
