Guwahati: Rangia Police shot an alleged robbery suspect during an operation near the Tulsibari Police Outpost in Assam. The man, identified as Janmehmud or Mela, took a bullet to his left leg. Authorities rushed him to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Changsari for emergency care. The shooting occurred during the Durga Puja festivities.
Police consider Mela a primary suspect in a string of area robberies. Officers had been hunting for him since they tracked down and arrested one of his associates a day earlier. That earlier bust involved a vehicle robbery case. Cops stayed on high alert through the evening to catch the remaining suspects.
Officials have not released the full details on what sparked the specific confrontation. As one official noted, the "firing came a day after Rangia Police chased and arrested one of his alleged associates in connection with a vehicle robbery case." Investigation into the suspect and his criminal ties continues as police await further developments.
