Guwahati: Police in North Guwahati arrested a man and seized nearly six kilograms of suspected counterfeit gold during a targeted operation late on May 27. The arrest took place in Bhetamukh, located within the Kamrup district.

Officers identified the suspect as Mostakin, also known as Rafikul Islam, a resident of Goreswar. During the arrest, police recovered 5.970 kilograms of fake gold, along with 84,000 rupees in cash and a mobile phone. The accused was intercepted while allegedly transporting the haul from Nayanpur.

This operation follows a significant bust from December, when Rangia Police arrested three individuals and recovered 1.4 kilograms of counterfeit gold biscuits. In that case, suspects from Bokajan and Rajasthan were caught during a vehicle inspection while traveling toward Tamulpur.

Investigators are currently working to determine if the two cases are connected. They are focusing on tracing the broader distribution network and identifying the sources behind the ongoing fake gold trade within Assam.
