Guwahati: Police are hunting a gang behind the theft of 57.42 quintals of areca nut worth Rs 37 lakh in Assam. The load vanished while in transit to another state on a truck, registration number AS-02DC-4522. Criminals reportedly intercepted the shipment at Kharagpur in West Bengal. Businessman Khairul Islam of Gerekir filed the complaint after the goods disappeared.
Jiyabur Rahman approached Khairul days later to sell the stolen shipment back to him. Khairul investigated the claim before heading to the Rupahihat Police Station. Officers detained Jiyabur, whose statement exposed a network involving truck owner Ansarul Haque of Kenduguri, Abu Hanifa of No. 1 Mullapatti, and Waliullah of Lailuri. The alleged mastermind, Nurzamal, remains on the run.
Investigators recovered 40 sacks of supari from the home of Nekibur Rahman in Rupahi. They found 19 sacks at Waliullah’s home and 35 sacks at Jiyabur’s residence in Tetiya Chaporitop. Officials are also looking into Sultan of Dighali and a man named Nasir for their roles in buying and moving the goods. Some traders allegedly tried to forge documents to sell the nuts as legitimate stock.
Investigating officer Abdul Barek Sarkar says the probe remains active. Police are looking into claims that certain leaders are shielding the primary suspect. Authorities are working to track down everyone involved in the heist. Regarding the ongoing efforts, officials stated, "Police are continuing efforts to trace them." The investigation continues to examine the roles of several local traders in the scheme.
