Kohima: The Pochury Students Union has voiced serious concern over the ongoing delays surrounding the NH-29 two-lane project between Kohima and Jessami. By extending its formal support to the Chakhesang Students Union, the group is intensifying pressure on authorities to address the stalled progress on Package-II of the highway.
As a critical lifeline for residents in the Phek and Meluri districts and eastern Nagaland, the road is essential for daily travel. The union reports that the construction delay has negatively impacted students, patients, farmers, and traders. Commuters face hazardous travel conditions, while frequent vehicle damage has led to significant financial losses for local residents.
The union criticized the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. and the assigned contractor for failing to deliver results despite numerous appeals. They argued that granting additional time to the contractor despite poor performance shows a lack of accountability and disregard for public grievances.
With the arrival of the monsoon season, road conditions have deteriorated further, making travel dangerous. The union is now urging officials to review the contractor's extensions, restore the existing road and drainage systems, and expedite the project. They warned that if authorities continue to ignore these demands, public frustration will lead to further calls for accountability regarding the administrative negligence.
