Phom Community Marks 74 Years of Peace with Call for Naga Unity

Kohima: The Eastern Nagaland People’s Union Dimapur recently hosted a celebration to mark 74 years of peace within the Phom community. Held at Ao Senden Riju in Dimapur, the event honored a historic commitment to unity and non-violence that began seven decades ago.

During the gathering, ENPUD President NT Thamlong Phom addressed the ongoing challenges facing Naga society. He argued that internal tribalism and favoritism hinder collective growth, preventing the population from achieving its full potential. He stated, "Tribalism and favouritism are destroying Naga society," while urging the community to find inspiration in their history.

The event centered on the theme of moving toward the platinum jubilee of peace. Thamlong noted that while modern society enjoys greater access to education and development than previous generations, a lack of true peace remains a significant barrier. He reflected on the wisdom of the community's pioneers, who chose to end headhunting by burying their weapons and establishing a lasting pact of brotherhood.

Organized by the Dimapur Phom Union, the observance served as a reminder of the foresight held by previous generations. Leaders emphasized that this long-standing peace agreement remains a foundation for the community and a model for the broader region.
