Kohima: The District Disaster Management Authority in Phek held its first quarterly pre-monsoon preparedness meeting on June 3 at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall. The session aimed to establish proactive response mechanisms for the upcoming rainy season, specifically targeting landslide mitigation and road accessibility.
Deputy Commissioner Rhosietho Nguori opened the session by noting the vulnerability of the region. He stated, "Phek is categorised as a high-risk zone, requiring update plans to manage high rainfalls and potential damaged." Discussions centered on the need for effective inter-departmental coordination to handle the environmental and structural challenges common during the monsoon.
Operational gaps emerged as a primary concern during the session. The Public Works Department reported that essential machinery, such as JCBs, often remains unavailable when needed most to clear road debris. Similarly, the Medical Department raised concerns regarding critical shortages in staffing and essential medicines. The State Disaster Response Force also noted a lack of necessary water rescue equipment, though the agency maintained that it remains fully prepared to handle emergency response calls.
Local departments indicated that efforts to clear forest areas are underway to reduce landslide risks. Officials confirmed that resources have been deployed to expedite this maintenance work, ensuring that all emergency plans are aligned before the heaviest rains arrive.
