Kohima: Authorities in Peren district have successfully curbed the practice of jungle burning following a period of environmental crisis. The District Planning and Development Board recently designated the district headquarters as a Green District Headquarter, officially banning hunting, fishing, and forest fires to protect the region's diverse ecosystem.
Peren District Planning Officer Danyi Domeh noted that the district faced devastating environmental and economic losses due to fires in previous years. He described the past situation as a serious concern, noting, "A year ago, Peren district witnessed massive jungle burning, which caused significant damage to the environment and economy."
Domeh attributed the recent progress to the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Hiazu Meru. Through strict enforcement of government directives and advocacy, the administration has prevented major burning incidents in 2026. Meru has also taken a firm stance against environmental degradation by intercepting over 10 truckloads of illegally smuggled timber that lacked proper transit permits.
Spanning 1,799 square kilometers, Peren remains one of the region's most fertile areas with vast virgin forests. Officials are now focused on preserving these landscapes to support sustainable livelihoods and future economic development, particularly as the Jalukie Valley grows as a potential commercial hub. Domeh called on local NGOs, student unions, and community members to maintain their support for these conservation efforts to ensure the long-term ecological health of the district.
