Kohima: Nagaland State Legal Services Authority Member Secretary Neiko Akami opened a new Legal Services Clinic at KROS College in Lerie, Kohima, on Friday. He addressed students immediately following the ceremony. Akami warned that carrying even small amounts of illegal drugs carries heavy penalties. These include jail time and steep fines for possession, sales, or trafficking.
The official also focused on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. He pointed to the Nirbhaya case to show how seriously the law treats sexual violence. He issued a stern warning regarding digital safety. Akami said, "Creation, possession, transmission or dissemination of child sexual abuse material, stating that such acts constitute offences under the POCSO Act and attract stringent punishment."
Akami explained the National Lok Adalat as an alternative way to settle disputes. The system handles motor accidents, loan recovery, and matrimonial cases. More than 200 cases were solved during the first two sessions this year. The third session takes place September 12.
Panel Lawyer Asen Walling introduced the NALSA Child-Friendly Legal Services for Children Scheme of 2024. She noted that children usually deal with adult-run systems. This new scheme focuses on the best interests of the child. It offers support for both victims and those in conflict with the law. The District Legal Services Authority acts as the primary contact point. Panel Lawyer Asen Longkumer chaired the event, and Dr. Vehutalu Vero provided the welcome address.
