Kohima: The NSCN Provisional Government is watching the Hebron-based NSCN group with deep suspicion. The faction, led by Maj Gen (retd) Ramkathing Varah, arrived in Eastern Nagalim claiming to start a peace campaign and reconciliation between groups headed by Maj Gen (retd) Ang Mai and Yung Aung. Angyo Jacob Tangshang Naga, political coordinator for Eastern Nagalim, says his group is tracking the visitors closely.
The Provisional Government attacked the group's track record on January 2, 2020, when it submitted a document on competencies. They claim this document ignores Naga political principles and bends to New Delhi's wishes. The leadership insists that no group has the mandate to trade Naga national goals for an arrangement acceptable to India. "Peace cannot be invoked as a pretext for their expansion nor can unity be preached by those whose own political conduct has contributed to division within the Naga national movement," the statement said.
Tensions remain high over the deaths of four Provisional Government cadres. Maj Sochipem Phungshok, Sgt Major Zairei, Sgt Bahnle Ahlahpyah, and Sgt Thansomi Vashi died at Hongpei village on March 28, 2026. The Provisional Government demands answers for these killings. They warned that Eastern Nagalim is not a political vacuum. They will not tolerate any organization using reconciliation talk to establish authority or hide Indian political influence. Any path to unity requires political integrity, not a breach of their peaceful fabric.
