Shillong: The NPP Ranikor Block Unit officially tapped its president, Nelbi T. Sangma, to run in the 2028 Assembly elections. Members reached the decision Tuesday at a general meeting in Rangthong village. Workers from all 78 primary units in the constituency showed up to cast their support.
Party leaders are currently busy rebuilding their grassroots network. Kitborlang Nongrem, the NPP State Secretary for South West Khasi Hills, said the reorganization effort is now 85 per cent complete. The team expects to finish the remaining work by the end of this month. This push is intended to lock in a win for Dr. DRL Nonglait in the upcoming Shillong parliamentary by-election.
The unit re-elected Sangma as block president during the meeting. They gave him full authority to name his executive committee. Supporters then pushed for him to be the party's choice for the next general polls.
“As leaders, we have accepted the suggestion of the workers. The Ranikor Block Unit has unanimously decided to propose Nelbi T. Sangma for 2028,” Nongrem said. The unit will now hand the resolution to the state leadership for a final sign-off.
