Shillong: The National People’s Party has not yet selected its official nominee for Meghalaya’s vacant Rajya Sabha seat. Cabinet Minister and senior party member Wailadmiki Shylla confirmed that formal internal discussions regarding the nomination have yet to take place.
Speculation continues to circulate regarding the potential candidacy of former minister James P.K. Sangma. While reports suggest several legislators from the Garo Hills support his bid, Shylla maintained that individual opinions do not dictate the final outcome. He stated that the party leadership will reach a collective consensus before making an official announcement.
The party remains in a strong position due to its majority in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. With support from various allied groups, the NPP expects to secure the Upper House seat without difficulty. Shylla noted that the party feels no immediate pressure to rush the decision because of its solid numerical advantage.
The Rajya Sabha seat becomes vacant this June, and the official election is scheduled for June 18. The successful candidate will serve a six-year term in Parliament. Political observers are watching the selection process closely, as the choice will reflect the party's internal dynamics and regional strategy moving forward.
