Kohima: The Naga People’s Front Pughoboto Division held a mass tree plantation drive on Friday to observe World Environment Day 2026. This initiative, coordinated by the NPF Central Office, the local division, the Pughoboto Sub-Divisional Administration, and the Nagaland Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, focused on planting fruit-bearing and native saplings across office compounds and roadsides.
Party leaders, volunteers, and government officials gathered to increase local green cover. Y. Vikheho Swu, President of the NPF Central Farmers’ Wing, used the occasion to warn against the dangers of rapid deforestation. He noted that the loss of forests has led to volatile weather patterns, rising temperatures, and frequent natural disasters like landslides and floods.
Swu emphasized that planting trees is a necessary response to these ecological threats. He urged the community to take long-term responsibility for the environment, stating, "environmental conservation does not end with planting a tree but requires sustained efforts to ensure its survival and growth."
Deputy Range Officer Vinoto K. Rochill praised the collaborative effort as a significant step toward community-led environmental stewardship. The event was chaired by NPF Pughoboto Division President Viyikhu Q. Wotsa, with an invocation provided by Women Pastor Aghali Sheqi. The project successfully united officials and residents in a shared commitment to building a healthier environment for future generations.
