Northeast MPs Demand Probe Into Brahmaputra Board Official

Shillong: Northeast lawmakers are gunning for Abhay Kumar. The Brahmaputra Board General Manager faces heavy heat over allegations of corruption and stalled development. Saleng Sangma and a group of MPs filed a joint protest with Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. They want an immediate inquiry into the official.

The memorandum cites a laundry list of misconduct. MPs claim Kumar shook down contractors for bribes and threatened to tank projects unless his demands were met. He also faces accusations of administrative rule-breaking. The politicians did not hold back. "We, the undersigned Members of Parliament from the North Eastern Region, wish to draw your urgent attention to serious complaints concerning the functioning of Kumar particularly in relation to development projects and employment matters in the North East," the letter stated.

Hiring practices under Kumar are under the microscope. The Board recently filled roles for Assistant Engineers, Junior Engineers, and MTS staff. Few locals made the cut. MPs now want these appointments axed. They are pushing for a fresh, rule-based recruitment process. They insist that deserving candidates from the Northeast deserve a fair shot at these government jobs.
