Activist Demands Probe Into Ri-Bhoi Coal Smuggling Syndicate

Shillong: Social activist John Franky Rymbai wants a police investigation into a coal smuggling ring in Ri-Bhoi. He filed a formal complaint with the district Superintendent of Police on August 16. The scheme allegedly uses 21-ton transport challans to push overloaded coal trucks through the corridor.

Rymbai, a member of the United Hynniewtrep Movement, Northern Region, claims the operation relies on forged weighment and check-gate records. He suspects an organized syndicate runs the show. The complaint hits hard, pointing to potential collusion involving workers from the Mining and Geology Department and the Transport Department.

The activist wants an FIR registered immediately. He is calling for the seizure of all vehicles and documents connected to the alleged fraud. He also wants police to secure CCTV footage and electronic evidence. Rymbai stated, "The allegations were being brought before the police in good faith and warranted an impartial and independent inquiry."

He is not naming specific suspects yet. His primary goal is to force a probe into these suspected cognisable offences. He expects the authorities to identify everyone involved and take legal action against those breaking the law.
