Agartala: The Northeast Frontier Railway will soon launch a Mainline Electric Multiple Unit train service connecting Agartala and Karimganj. General Manager Chetan Kumar Srivastava announced the project on June 19, noting that this will be the first service of its kind within the NFR network. These modern electric trains aim to boost operational efficiency and provide faster travel for daily commuters between Tripura and southern Assam.

Alongside the new service, the NFR has finalized the electrification of the line from Sabroom to Guwahati. This transition reduces reliance on diesel locomotives and improves the speed of both passenger and freight transport. Srivastava emphasized the benefits of the technology, stating that MEMU trains are modern electric trains designed to carry a large number of passengers while offering improved comfort, faster acceleration and enhanced operational efficiency.

Infrastructure development is also moving forward at several regional hubs. Agartala Railway Station is undergoing a major renovation as part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. A new three-storey building is currently under construction, with the initial phase projected to finish by March 2027. Work at Udaipur and Kumarghat stations is also proceeding quickly, with completion expected by September. During his visit to Agartala, Srivastava inaugurated new lifts on platforms one and two to assist elderly travelers and those with disabilities.

Looking ahead, railway authorities are working to complete collaborative projects at Sekerkot station by August 2025. Officials are also evaluating plans for a double railway line between Badarpur and Agartala to increase overall network capacity. While minor power issues have emerged on the New Haflong section, management is actively resolving the situation to ensure continued service growth.
