Shillong: NIT Meghalaya scrapped its controversial student undertaking forms. The change follows pressure from the Khasi Students’ Union. The KSU Education Cell met with school officials to fight restrictive policies. Students complained they were forced to sign documents banning them from joining student groups. The school officially agreed to end this practice starting in the 2026-27 academic session.
Alerick Kharjana, the KSU Education Secretary, championed the move. He confirmed the institute also cleared up confusion regarding attendance. Many students feared they needed 100 percent attendance to stay enrolled. Registrar Dr. B. Chakravarty clarified that the real requirement sits at 75 percent. “The institute has categorically stated that it does not insist upon 100 per cent attendance as a mandatory requirement,” Kharjana noted.
The administration highlighted its existing grievance systems to handle future disputes. They are building a new online portal to help students track complaints. This digital shift aims to make the school more transparent. Kharjana called the result a win for student rights. The KSU maintains that listening to pupils leads to better campus policy.
