Shillong: Meghalaya High Court Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere laid the foundation stone for the new East Khasi Hills District and Sessions Court Complex on Tuesday. The project site sits in Umsawli, Mawpat. Construction marks a major shift for the state legal system.
The current Shillong court building hit its limit years ago. It served for over a century but cannot handle modern caseloads. Judges, lawyers, and litigants face constant space shortages. The new complex aims to fix these deep flaws. It offers more courtrooms and better amenities for the public.
Chief Justice Mohite Dere noted the design focuses on integrity and speed. She said, "The new court complex would pave the way for a stronger, more efficient and citizen-friendly justice delivery system."
The facility integrates tech to back the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. It features e-filing, video conferencing, and specialized witness rooms. Law Minister Lahkmen Rymbui promised government support to finish the work on schedule. High Court judges and local bar members attended the ceremony to mark the start of the build.
