Kohima: The Department of Agricultural Extension at Nagaland University's Medziphema campus launched a five-day hands-on training program focused on poultry production technology. The workshop, which began on June 1, is a collaborative effort between the Farmers Cell and the Department of Livestock Production and Management.
Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dipak Sinha opened the event by addressing Nagaland's heavy reliance on imported meat. He encouraged participants to treat poultry farming as a serious business opportunity, noting that local production can drive rural development and provide stable employment. Organizers emphasized that moving toward scientific farming methods is essential for the region.
During the sessions, experts will cover critical topics including housing, brooding, chick management, and disease prevention. The curriculum also addresses essential business skills, such as record keeping and financial literacy, to help attendees manage sustainable farm operations. Prof. J. Longkumer noted that seeing educated youth show interest in agriculture is a promising development for the local economy.
The program includes 12 participants from across the state who are looking to either establish or improve their existing poultry ventures. Dr. Mary N. Odyuo, who chaired the inaugural event, noted that the training will run through June 5. Since its founding in 2005, the Farmers Cell has focused on these types of practical, need-based programs to support self-reliance among regional agri-entrepreneurs.
