Nagaland Rolls Out Expanded Life Insurance Scheme for Residents

Kohima: Nagaland is expanding its financial safety net. The Finance Department notified a revised framework for the Chief Minister’s Life Insurance Scheme for 2026-27. It provides a free Rs 2 lakh life insurance policy to household breadwinners for death from any cause. The state covers the full premium.

The plan adds extra protection. Accidental insurance of Rs 2 lakh covers the breadwinner plus three family members for death or total disability. Paralyzed or dismembered victims receive up to Rs 2 lakh, while partial disability claims net up to Rs 1 lakh. Eligibility follows Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana age brackets: 18 to 50 for life insurance, 18 to 70 for accidental coverage. Officials relaxed the upper age limit for specific government workers.

Indigenous inhabitants or permanent residents with valid certificates qualify. Accredited journalists, casual staff, and government employees stationed outside the state are also in. Regular employees already using the State Government Salary Package are excluded. The state defines a household as a family unit sharing a common kitchen. All enrollment happens through the portal cmlis.nagaland.gov.in using Aadhaar authentication and mobile OTPs.

District officials must assist with verification when post-mortems are unavailable for claims. The notification warns of strict legal consequences for fraud. "Any individual or official found involved in fraudulent activity at any stage of registration, validation or claims processing will be held liable and prosecuted under relevant provisions of law." The Finance Department will release specific operational guidelines soon.
