Kohima: Nagaland ministers met with Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh on July 1 to grow the state's lavender industry. The goal is to build on the CSIR Aroma Mission, which first took root in Zunheboto back in 2022. Lavender means money. Tourism minister Temjen Imna Along and advisor Küzholüzo Nienu want to replicate the success of the Purple Revolution seen in Jammu and Kashmir.

Dr. Singh suggested that local experts visit Jammu and Kashmir to learn how to manage these crops effectively. Proper growth requires a plan. He pushed for a scientific review of land across Nagaland to find the best spots for planting. The federal government intends to provide technical support, training, and ways to get these products to market.

Beyond farming, the meeting aimed to drag more science funding into the state. Dr. Singh wants to link the Department of Science and Technology with local colleges to offer cash and better gear. He stated that the pilot initiative could be scaled up to other suitable districts to generate sustainable livelihoods, strengthen farmers’ incomes and promote rural entrepreneurship.

The group also looked at ways to boost biotech and innovation research. Officials from the state and the federal level plan to meet again to map out these upgrades. It is a long game.
