Kohima: The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) showcased four advanced disaster risk reduction initiatives at the 2nd BRICS Technical Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction in Puri, Odisha. Held from June 3 to 5, 2026, the international forum provided a platform for the state to present digital tools designed to improve climate resilience and emergency governance.
Key presentations included the Disaster Risk Transfer and Protection Scheme, which uses data-driven instruments to offer rapid financial aid during climate-related disasters. Officials also introduced ELIONA, an artificial intelligence and supercomputing platform that provides high-resolution weather forecasting, hazard simulations, and risk analytics. The NSDMA noted that these tools represent a shift toward smarter governance, stating that these initiatives are "helping position Nagaland as a hub for disaster risk governance innovation while advancing the vision of a resilient state through science, technology, community participation and proactive governance."
To streamline emergency response, the state highlighted the Nagaland State Disaster Management Information System. This digital platform integrates real-time data collection with resource tracking and damage assessment to support better decision-making during crises. Complementing this is the Decentralized Relief Payment System, which ensures transparent and direct financial assistance to disaster victims.
Delegates from BRICS member nations praised Nagaland for integrating technology with community participation and governance. This participation highlights India's ongoing commitment to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and emphasizes the value of global cooperation in managing emerging climate risks.
