Kohima: Nagaland marked World Environment Day 2026 by hosting a series of tree plantation drives, cleanliness campaigns, and awareness programs under the theme Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future. State officials, community groups, and local institutions coordinated these events to address the escalating impacts of climate change.
Home Commissioner Abhijit Sinha attended a key event at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat. Addressing the audience, Sinha stressed the urgency of protecting the environment amid the growing impact of climate change. The Municipal Affairs Department concurrently launched a Waste-to-Resource Exchange program in Kohima to promote a circular economy.
During this initiative, government offices traded obsolete electronics like batteries and air conditioners for color-coded waste bins to improve segregation. Public participants swapped plastic waste for reusable shopping bags, and all collected e-waste was designated for professional recycling through e-CIRCLE.
In Kohima, Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem challenged local citizens to adopt more sustainable habits. He urged residents to make a choice, asking them whether they intend to be consumers or conservers, predators or protectors, selfish or selfless, destroyers or sustainers, and whether to live only for the present or work for posterity. Other officials and experts at the event emphasized the link between gender equality, sustainable agriculture, and long-term environmental protection.
