Kohima: The Employees State Insurance scheme is now mandatory for all businesses across Nagaland following a directive from the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Effective November 1, 2025, the mandate applies to every district in the state, requiring all factories and establishments with 10 or more workers to officially register under the ESI Act of 1948.
This registration requirement covers employees earning a monthly wage up to 21,000 rupees, or 25,000 rupees for individuals with disabilities. The mandate includes a wide range of sectors such as hotels, restaurants, shops, educational and medical institutions, and newspaper establishments. It also extends to casual and contractual workers employed by municipal bodies, government entities, and charitable trusts.
The Nagaland Labour Department has issued a formal notice reminding employers to complete their enrollment within 15 days of the scheme becoming applicable. The department warned that businesses failing to comply face potential consequences, noting that "failure to register will attract penalties and legal notices under Section 85 of the ESI Act, 1948." Proprietors are urged to finalize their registration immediately to avoid legal action.
