Kohima: The Department of Environment, Forests and Climate Change celebrated World Environment Day 2026 by hosting an essay competition in Kohima. Held at the Forest Office Complex, the event invited students to engage with the theme Inspired by nature. For Climate. For Our Future. Students from six local schools participated in the contest, where they were encouraged to think critically about the environmental challenges facing humanity.
DFO Kohima, Dr. Sevono Seletsu, opened the event by urging participants to share their ideas with confidence. Following the competition, CCF Sidramappa M. Chalkapure emphasized the practical steps individuals can take to protect the planet, such as reducing energy use and utilizing public transport. He remarked, "Beyond competitions, the message of conservation must be carried forward."
Rahrane Bethel Zhoh of Mezhür Higher Secondary School secured the first prize, followed by Livana K. Zhimomi from Fernwood School and Keduvinu Kharutso from Little Flower Higher Secondary School. These students will receive their formal awards from Minister C.L. John on June 5 at the Kohima Peace Memorial and Eco Park.
Meanwhile, the Mokokchung Forest Division conducted a sensitization program on biodiversity conservation at Changtongya Old Village. Supported by the Forest and Biodiversity Management in the Himalaya Project, the initiative focused on sustainable forest management and community livelihoods. SDO Civil Sangpangchang Longkumer served as the guest of honor, advocating for collective action to ensure long term environmental sustainability across the region.
