Kohima: The Health and Family Welfare Department in Nagaland has released a formal clarification to address confusion surrounding its recent ban on tobacco and nicotine in food products. Issued on June 17, the statement aims to resolve ambiguity regarding the interpretation and implementation of the regulation that began on June 2, 2026.
This prohibition covers the manufacture, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, distribution, and sale of any food items containing tobacco or nicotine. The department confirmed that these measures are scheduled to remain in effect for one year, expiring on June 1, 2027. Regarding the specific scope of the order, the department stated that the "ban specifically applies to food products containing tobacco and/or nicotine as ingredients."
Local enforcement of the policy will fall to food safety officials. These teams are tasked with monitoring their respective jurisdictions while working alongside district administration and police authorities to ensure compliance with the notification.
