Kohima: The Kohima District Legal Services Authority and the District Tobacco Control Cell in Mokokchung held extensive outreach programs to observe World No Tobacco Day. Under the theme of unmasking the appeal of nicotine and countering addiction, authorities focused on protecting young people from the health and legal consequences of tobacco use.
In Kohima, a team of 10 lawyers and three volunteers visited seven institutions to engage with over 700 children. The sessions focused on the prohibition of tobacco sales to minors, restrictions on advertising, and the legal ban on shops operating near schools. Panel lawyers including Kekhriengunuo Catherine, Kusalu Lohe, and Asenla Walling explained the specifics of the COTPA Act and the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act to various church and children's home groups. Students participated by taking pledges to live disciplined, healthy lives.
Separately, the District Tobacco Control Cell hosted an event at the Impur Baptist Church Youth Ministry in Mokokchung for over 250 students from the local Bible seminary and nursing school. Dr. K. Tiasenla discussed the significant health risks associated with tobacco consumption, while consultant Nukshiwati addressed hygiene and awareness.
