Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has requested continued assistance from the central government and the North Eastern Council to drive infrastructure and economic growth in his state. Addressing the 73rd NEC plenary session in Shillong, Rio presented a list of strategic priorities to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister for DoNER Jyotiraditya Scindia.
During his address, Rio expressed his gratitude for existing partnerships while emphasizing the need for sustained cooperation. He stated, "I extend my sincere appreciation to the GoI, the @MDoNER_India, & the NEC_GoI for their continued support in the development of Nagaland & the NE Region. This forum provides an opportunity to join other North Eastern States in advancing the collective development of the region."
The Chief Minister highlighted fiscal challenges resulting from the discontinuation of the Revenue Deficit Grant, which he noted has created a significant gap in funding essential public services. To address these needs, he proposed several infrastructure projects, including the Trans-Nagaland Highway, the development of Ciethu Airport, and expanded railway and waterway connectivity.
Education and healthcare also remain top priorities for the state government. Rio advocated for the establishment of an IIT and a Greenfield AIIMS, alongside further investment in the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Kohima. The state is also focusing on power infrastructure, youth development, and sports facilities.
Regarding energy, Rio informed the council that the state is working on a policy for petroleum and natural gas exploration that respects Nagaland's unique constitutional status. He noted that negotiations between Nagaland and Assam are yielding progress toward resuming operations in the Disputed Area Belt along their shared border.
