Kohima: Nagaland is set to receive its first direct rail connection to the state capital by December 2029. During a review meeting in Kohima on Monday, Northeast Frontier Railway officials briefed Governor Nand Kishore Yadav on the 78.42-km Dimapur-Kohima railway project. The line spans across Assam's Karbi Anglong district along with the Chumoukedima and Kohima districts in Nagaland.
While the Dhansiri-Shokhuvi and Shokhuvi-Molvom sections are already operational, construction on the remaining route faces significant hurdles. Engineers are contending with complex geological formations, high-pressure groundwater, landslide-prone terrain, and heavy monsoon rainfall. Officials noted that tunnel construction has been particularly difficult due to poor rock conditions and various fault zones.
Governor Yadav underscored the strategic value of the project, stating that it "is expected to transform transportation in Nagaland by reducing travel time between Dimapur and Kohima, improving access for commuters, students and patients, and strengthening freight movement." Beyond local transport, the project aims to stimulate tourism and create new employment opportunities across the state.
The meeting also covered the Integrated Redevelopment of Dimapur Railway Station, which is scheduled for completion by July 2028. This modernization plan includes upgraded passenger amenities, new office complexes, and improved circulation areas. To keep these timelines on track, railway authorities have requested state government assistance in resolving land mutation issues, securing approach roads, and managing riverbed mining activities near bridges. Additionally, officials called for a coordinated effort to remove site encroachments that continue to delay construction progress.
