Kohima: The Nagaland Baptist Church Council has issued a stern condemnation following reports of violence, intimidation, and vandalism during the recent bye-poll in Wokha. Dr. Villo Naleo, Secretary of Social Concern, described the attacks on candidates as a direct assault on the rule of law and human dignity. He stated, "The incident of poll-related violence in Wokha, including the attack on candidates by certain individuals and groups, are reprehensible and utterly unacceptable."
The council expressed concern over the growing trend of normalizing violence to achieve political goals. According to the organization, this behavior threatens social harmony and undermines public trust in democratic systems. The NBCC is now calling for law enforcement to identify and hold accountable anyone involved in instigating or carrying out these acts, noting that elections should serve as a peaceful democratic process rather than a site for aggression.
Beyond the issue of violence, the council addressed the conduct of elected MLAs and Municipal Councilors. It reminded representatives that their campaign manifestos are not empty rhetoric but a public covenant with the electorate. The NBCC urged officials to move past post-election complacency and demonstrate transparency in their governance. The council stressed that leadership is a sacred trust that requires ongoing commitment to the common good long after the polling period concludes.
