Kohima: The Naga Students Federation is fighting back. Police filed an FIR against the organization's finance secretary, Katho P. Awomi, on July 2. The move followed a June 30 clash at a Dimapur restaurant. CCTV footage shows Awomi trashing the venue owned by Tito Yepthomi, president of the Dimapur Restaurant Union.
Yepthomi claims the incident stemmed from demands for monetary tributes. The union had previously discussed a request for financial support, asking affiliates for 5,000 rupees each. The NSF denies any extortion. They argue that restaurant owners discussed these contributions voluntarily as a sign of goodwill.
The federation is now demanding the state enforce the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act. They claim these restaurants are operating illegally. The group insists the public is being distracted by sensational headlines. Regarding the vandalism, the NSF says an internal probe is underway.
The federation warned against rushing to judgment before the police finish their work. The official statement noted, "It would be improper and prejudicial, when the matter is under investigation, to arrive at conclusions based solely on selective information or public speculation." The group maintains its budget relies entirely on the generosity of supporters. They promised to hold themselves accountable if any wrongdoing is actually proven.
