Imphal: Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh is pushing for transparency. On November 3, he called on the state Home Department to release regular updates on the biometric enrolment of Myanmar nationals. He wants the public to know exactly who is entering the state. The demand follows reports from Mizoram, which indicated that biometric efforts for refugees there are nearing completion.
Singh took to X to frame the request as a matter of national security rather than partisan politics. He stressed the importance of border protection and long-term safety for indigenous communities. "The issue was not about politics but about national security, border protection and safeguarding the future of the state's people," Singh wrote.
He expects the Manipur government to disclose specific figures and verified data, similar to the tracking methods used in Mizoram. Back in August, Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas told the state Assembly that authorities had already identified 24,475 illegal immigrants from Myanmar. Singh believes regular reporting will help win back public confidence and prove the government is serious about guarding the region.
