Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has expressed deep concern over the rising number of refugees fleeing the ongoing conflict in Myanmar. As instability continues in the neighbouring nation, the constant arrival of displaced people is placing a heavy burden on the state's infrastructure and public resources.
Speaking to reporters in Shillong, the Chief Minister highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the border situation. "The situation across the border remains uncertain, and more displaced people are expected to arrive. The growing refugee population is becoming a serious burden for the state," Lalduhoma said.
Mizoram shares an extensive border with Myanmar and has welcomed thousands of refugees due to strong ethnic and cultural ties between the local communities. Official data indicates that more than 40,000 Myanmar nationals are currently seeking shelter in the state. Zokhawthar, located in the Champhai district, has seen its population swell significantly as it absorbs many of those crossing the border.
In response to the humanitarian crisis, the state government has initiated a biometric registration process to track those living in various districts. While Mizoram remains committed to providing assistance, state authorities have emphasized the long-term financial and administrative strain of hosting such a large population. The Central Government is simultaneously pursuing plans to fence segments of the India-Myanmar border and implement tighter regulations on cross-border travel.
