Shillong: Opposition leader and Songsak MLA Dr. Mukul Sangma recently inspected the 100-bed hospital project in Chidaret, North Garo Hills, following reports that portions of the facility grounds have been encroached upon. Local sources indicate that a significant amount of land designated for the project may have already been seized.
During his visit, Dr. Sangma met with representatives from local area development committees to discuss the future of the facility. He emphasized that the hospital should serve as a cornerstone for broader medical and educational growth, suggesting it could eventually house nursing colleges and paramedical institutions. He pointed to the successful development of Tura Medical College as a model for leveraging existing infrastructure into teaching facilities.
Dr. Sangma noted that the project site spans roughly 100 acres, gifted to the government by the local Nokma and clan members. He expressed concern regarding the protection of this community-donated land.
Beyond the hospital, the MLA advocated for the urgent development of the road connecting Resubelpara to Anogre. He highlighted the strategic necessity of this route, which serves as a vital link between western Meghalaya and Assam. According to Dr. Sangma, improving this connectivity would not only bolster access to healthcare and education but also unlock the tourism potential of the region, which boasts diverse landscapes and cultural significance.
