Agartala: West Tripura Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb ordered BSNL to fix failing telecom infrastructure along the state border. He met officials at the Telecom Advisory Committee headquarters in Agartala to address service blackouts. Current gaps leave Indian mobile SIM cards dead for 10-kilometre stretches near the frontier. Meanwhile, Bangladeshi signals penetrate 15 kilometres inside Indian soil.
The lack of domestic towers hurts locals and complicates security operations. Deb emphasized the danger during the session. "Tripura is a state with an 80 per cent border area. In these border regions, it is often observed that our SIM cards fail to function for stretches of up to 10 kilometres. Without our own towers, we cannot communicate, yet Bangladeshi network signals reach up to 15 kilometres into our territory. That poses a greater security risk," Deb said.
The MP grilled officials on the current status of 5G rollout. He demanded specific data on speed and coverage expansion. Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee attended the meeting alongside senior BSNL staff. The group reviewed ongoing projects, including past infrastructure complaints and job creation goals. Deb noted that previous international roaming restrictions in the Northeast took too long to implement. He now wants immediate action to secure the border network.
