Guwahati: A mother and her daughter died Wednesday evening in Borjan, Digboi, after a 220-volt power wire snapped and landed on them. Krishna Bhuyan and her daughter Gitimoni Bhuyan were sitting on their verandah when the overhead domestic line failed. A minor son witnessed the entire tragedy.
Neighbors rushed the pair to the Digboi Community Health Centre. Doctors referred them to the Tinsukia Medical College and Hospital, but both died before or during the transfer. The family remains devastated.
Anger quickly boiled over in the community. Residents blocked the Digboi-Duliajan road and protested outside the local electricity department office. They demanded answers regarding maintenance standards and oversight of lines hanging near residential homes.
Nitya Nanda Sonowal, a sub-divisional engineer with the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited, addressed the crisis. "The matter had been escalated to the higher authorities," Sonowal said. He stated the department is currently seeking financial relief for the survivors.
Authorities have suspended power in the area to allow technical crews to repair the network. Locals continue to press for an official inquiry into whether routine safety checks were ignored before the wire snapped.
