Modi warns against weaponizing technology and minerals at BRICS

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a blunt warning on Sunday, September 13. He cautioned that the weaponization of technology and critical minerals threatens shared economic growth. Global powers are using these resources as tools of geopolitical pressure. This behavior destabilizes the market.

Modi delivered his remarks at the BRICS Summit alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping. He argued for inclusivity in technological development. This stance addresses growing fears over supply-chain vulnerabilities and China's hold on raw materials. Beijing currently processes about 90 percent of the world's rare earths. These elements drive production for smartphones, electric vehicles, and renewable energy gear. "The weaponisation of technology and critical minerals can hinder our shared progress. Therefore, we have emphasised inclusivity in the adoption of technology," Modi stated during the session on resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability.

China restricted rare earth exports last year. Tensions with the United States prompted the move. While some controls have since eased, India remains focused on finding reliable supply routes. Modi pushed the BRICS logistics supply chain cooperation framework to fix these gaps. He noted that India’s presidency prioritized resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability. He thanked the members for their help in turning that vision into a win-win collaboration.
