Imphal: A violent mob torched security vehicles and pelted stones at an Assam Rifles camp in Senapati, Manipur, on Tuesday night. Chaos erupted around 9:02 p.m. when social media messages claimed a standoff was unfolding between the Assam Rifles and the Naga Army at Oklong village. The messages urged the public to assemble at the town traffic point for "necessary action."
The defense spokesperson clarified that the unrest followed an area domination patrol near Makuilongdi. Intelligence reports suggested armed cadres were operating outside designated camps in violation of Ceasefire Ground Rules. Security columns withdrew, but a large crowd marched on the Naga Taphou camp by 9:30 p.m. demanding an immediate exit from the area.
Protesters turned destructive quickly. A private Alto car and a waiting shed were set ablaze outside the base gate. As security personnel returned from their patrol, the mob escalated the violence. They overturned one military truck and incinerated two Assam Rifles Gypsy vehicles. Security forces responded by firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
Police and CRPF units arrived to help restore order. Officials are still assessing the full extent of the damage. No injuries have been confirmed yet. Authorities continue to monitor the district closely as the situation remains volatile.
