Protesters Torch Vehicles in Senapati After Standoff Rumors

Imphal: Violence rocked Senapati on the night of July 14 after social media posts triggered a massive protest. Messages began circulating at 9:02 p.m., claiming an active confrontation between the Assam Rifles and the Huthrong Brigade, Headquarters, Naga Army, situated at Oklong village. The digital alerts demanded the public gather at the town traffic point for "necessary action."

A growing mob marched on the local Assam Rifles Company Operating Base. They demanded the immediate withdrawal of the security force from Oklong. Protesters torched an Alto car parked outside the base gate and burned a nearby waiting shed. The chaos deepened as the crowd turned violent.

Reports of an Assam Rifles retreat initially calmed the gathering. However, the situation quickly spiraled again as troops returned from the area. Protesters overturned an Assam Rifles truck and set fire to two Assam Rifles Gypsy vehicles. Security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse the rioters and restore order. Authorities are monitoring the area closely, but officials have not yet released details regarding injuries, arrests, or the total cost of the damage.
