Shillong: Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla has launched a feasibility survey for a new road project designed to link Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district with Assam. The proposed route passes through the Sumer area and seeks to create a more direct transportation corridor for residents and local businesses.
During the inspection, the MLA identified potential alignments for the road and pinpointed optimal locations for a bridge spanning the Kupli River. This crossing is considered a vital component of the infrastructure plan to bridge the gap between the two states. Shylla was joined by Public Works Department Executive Engineer G. Langstang and various community leaders from the surrounding regions to evaluate the site.
Addressing the importance of the project, Shylla said the exercise was undertaken to determine the most feasible route for the proposed road connectivity project. She emphasized that the initiative will improve accessibility and stimulate trade, ultimately fostering long-term socio-economic growth for the border region.
The MLA spent the day gathering direct feedback from community members to ensure the project meets local needs. By strengthening these transit networks, officials hope to open new economic avenues for the communities within the Sutnga-Saipung and Sumer areas.
