Shillong: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum is taking aim at the Meghalaya government over how it fills seats in higher education. He claims the state is wrongly applying its job reservation rules to academic admissions. It is a constitutional mess.
Nongrum fired off a formal representation to Chief Secretary Shakil P. Ahammed this Wednesday. The issue involves central pool seats for MBBS, paramedical studies, engineering, architecture, agriculture, and veterinary science at institutions outside the state. The government currently splits these spots based on the state job quota system. This system dictates percentages for Khasi-Jaintia, Garo, and other indigenous groups versus the general category.
The MLA argues that the reservation policy was strictly built for employment, not classroom placement. He claims the government lacks a specific policy for educational advancement. He wants answers. Nongrum demanded a written explanation from the state within 30 days regarding the constitutional footing for this practice.
Nongrum warned that if the state ignores his request or provides an inadequate response, he will take legal action. He stated, "If the government fails to give a satisfactory response or take action, he would be left with no option but to seek constitutional remedies."
