Aizawl: Chief Minister Lalduhoma recently led a review of the 132 MW Tuivai Hydroelectric Power Project alongside Power Minister F. Rodingliana and department officials. The project has cleared the detailed project report stage and is now prepared for the tendering process. Authorities are currently weighing the implementation of the project through a public-private partnership model.

The initiative aims to address Mizoram's heavy reliance on external power. The state currently faces a peak demand of 182 MW, which is expected to climb to 213 MW by 2030. With a current local generation capacity of only 50.20 MW, the state meets just a fraction of its needs. The government spends over Rs. 64,900 lakh annually on power purchases, making the expansion of local infrastructure a priority.

Originally identified in 1992 with a 210 MW capacity, the project was redesigned to 132 MW after re-surveying due to border overlaps with Manipur. The project carries an estimated cost of Rs. 2,289.50 crore and officials intend to finish construction within five years. Financial planning for the development will involve ongoing consultations with the Finance Department.

During the session, leaders also examined the status of the Tuirini Hydroelectric Project and various distribution improvements. These energy initiatives are expected to be key topics of discussion during the upcoming visit of the Union Power Minister.
